An important day for 247 Sqn was on 9th January 1943 when three
brand new Typhoons were delivered to the Sqn. Two days later
Sqn Ldr Mervill was first to fly the new plane followed by Fl/Lt Gray,
P/O Gear and F/O A H Burton.
On 18th May 1943 , Allen’s plane ( EJ977 ZY-H) suffered structural failure; the tail plane detached and one hour into the calibration flight crashed. He is buried in Petersfield War Cemetery in Hampshire.
