CHAPPELL P A Fl Off 247 Sqn

Fl Off P A Chappell
F/O Peter Anthony Chappell (125753)
d. 5th Oct 1943
A particular pastime of the pilots of 247 Sqn was to grow a colossal great moustache. “ Pete Chappell sported a bloody beaut that should be seen from behind in a couple of months” reported F/O H L Van Zuilecom (Australian pilot)
On 5/10/1943, he flew a Typhoon (JP581V) on a raid codenamed Ramrod. He shot down a Fieseler Fi 156, however, his plane flew into the ground and he was killed in the crash. P/O Chappell is commemorated at St Desir War Cemetery near Chartres in France
