Welcome to the RAF Exeter Archive.
During WW2 the St George and Dragon Inn, Clyst St George, Devon was a favourite haunt of service men and women from many branches of the armed forces stationed in the South West of England. Amongst them 310 Sqn Czech, 616 Sqn, 414 Bomb Sqn, 247 Sqn,257 Sqn and 1426 (EAC) Flight spent their leisure hours at the inn.
They came together in comradeship and left a record of their happy and sad times behind them by signing their names on the ceiling. It is reported to have begun with an Australian pilot who was hoisted up by his friends so that he could sign his name. He intended to return after the war to search out his signature. We will never know if he did so. The ghostly sketches of the remaining signatures are captured on our website.
This archive is also the story of the family who managed the St George and Dragon Inn throughout the war years. Harold Lobb the landlord and his daughters Ailsa and Joan. Ailsa Loaring nee Lobb sadly died in 2019 but left her memories to be preserved here ; autograph books, newspaper cuttings signed by the pilots, photos, and of course the wonderful scroll designed by the personnel of 310 sqn and presented to Harold Lobb and kept behind the bar during the war.
