FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THE HAROLD
& AILSA LOBB c1943
This is a family and friends group photo taken outside of the George & Dragon in 1943. Ailsa Lobb is next to Gus a fellow barmaid and Toby Northcote of Woodbury and her daughter Joy. Harold Lobb is behind Ailsa leaning on the window sill. Joan Lobb is holding the baby. Ailsa’s mother Lily Lobb nee Such died on the 17th January 1941. Harold married Edna (seated on the front step) in 1944. Behind the group, you can see the garages that are still there today.

HAROLD LOBB &
HIS SON DERRICK JOHN THOMAS LOBB
Harold & Derrick Lobb standing outside the front of the George & Dragon Inn. Derrick transferred from the Royal Navy to the Merchant Navy because it was thought to be safer, but tragically Derrick died on the 17th Feb 1947 aged 21 when he fell by accident backwards into cargo hold No.5 on the ship Hornby Grange in Royal Victoria Docks,London. He had only joined the vessel the week previously.

The bar of the George & Dragon Inn much as it appeared during the war years—-(without the flowers). When we acquired some of the ceiling boards in 2009, we were mystified as to the many burn marks on them. These were caused, as you can see in the photograph, by the ceiling lights.

You can clearly see the repair work to the roof after the Hurricane plane ploughed into it in Sept 1942 and which cost Sgt Albert Stillin his life and very nearly the life of Harold Lobb’s too. Harold would normally have been resting in his bedroom but that particular day he had remained in the bar area. A very lucky escape. The telephone box still survives today and if only it could talk! What tales it would tell. The ballroom on the far left of the picture with the flat roof was used as a dormitory for the aircrew. Ailsa’s bedroom, during the war years, was the window above and to the right of the telephone box.
