Newspaper Articles – the St George and Dragon Inn over the years

The St George and Dragon Inn at Clyst St George has featured in many newspapers over the years. The historic ceiling was taken down in 1975 and we are afraid to say that the whole sorry episode reflects badly on the brewery owner Bass Carrington at the time.. For Gordon Taylor to find the ceiling panels carelessly discarded in the skips speaks for itself. A pub in Cambridge called the Eagle was more discerning with regard to our national heritage and kept their wartime ceiling in situ. What a very wise decision which has attracted hundreds of American visitors and others from around the world, to view it. Their ceiling is smashing and emotive but does not feature many personal signatures. If you can imagine what a wonderful tribute the St George and Dragon ceiling would have been with its hundreds of signatures. We would go as far as to say that it would have been a national treasure right here in Clyst St George ,Devon. Enough of the fanciful though. Please browse through these newspaper articles starting with the one from 1975.

EXPRESS AND ECHO 29TH MAY 1997.The names of Bernard Greenaway and John Finnis were not on the ceiling panels that we acquired in 2010
Bass Carrington who were responsible for removing the ceiling and scrapping it, end the following article stating that the ceiling wasn’t retained because it wasn’t in keeping with the brewery image.
Nothing more to say really. The Eagle Pub in Cambridge which attracts thousands of visitors each year who gaze up at their ceiling would find this highly amusing I’m sure!
