Gordon Cowling Taylor of Taylors Paints — saviour of the St George and Dragon Ceiling

GORDON TAYLOR OF TAYLORS PAINTS

Gordon Taylor of Taylors Paints (W E Taylor and Son Ltd) at Bishops Court, Clyst St Mary, played a major part in saving the George & Dragon wartime ceiling. His quickness and presence of mind meant that some of the ceiling boards were saved from ending up in rubbish skips .He then carefully stored them at Bishops Court for many years. We owe him a debt of thanks.
He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Fleet Air Arm during WW2 and a member of the Flying Club at Exeter before the war and he and his wife held their wedding reception there.
During the late 1980s he flew his own helicopter in connection with his business.

We wonder if anyone remembers the ceiling panels during their time at Taylors Paints.

Many thanks to Mrs Karoline Stanton (Mr Gordon Taylor’s daughter) for her lovely letter. Sadly the local museums are no longer interested in displaying our heritage record on a permanent basis.
