In summer of 1939, he escaped to France via Poland. He trained as a pilot in the FAF and then escaped to Britain. Served with 310 Sqn as a F/O from April 1942 to October 1943. He then volunteered for the Czech Air Unit on the Eastern front in the Soviet Union. Discharged from the REF 31/1/1944. Became a founder member of the 1st Czech Fighter Regiment and took part in the Slovak National Uprising in Oct 1944.
